An ultrasound guided Thyroid / Neck Biopsy is a medical procedure that is performed in order to diagnose the nature of a thyroid nodule.
At University Radiology, our interventional radiologists perform biopsies using ultrasound imaging to precisely guide the needle to the section being evaluated.
What are the benefits?
A biopsy is often the only way to definitely diagnose the nature of a thyroid nodule after it has been detected during a physical exam or an imaging exam. Needle biopsy is the least invasive way to obtain a tissue sample for testing.
How does the procedure work?
Your radiologist will numb the skin overlying the location of interest with a local anesthetic. Once the area is numb, a biopsy needle is guided to the location of interest with ultrasound image guidance. Once the tissue sample is taken, the biopsy needle is removed and a bandage is applied. Most needle biopsy procedures take less than 30 minutes.
Is a prescription or referral required?
All ultrasound exams require a written prescription or referral stating the exam being ordered, and the patient's signs and symptoms indicating medical necessity of the procedure.
University Radiology's board-certified interventional radiologists are among New Jersey's leaders in specialized, minimally invasive procedures to diagnose and treat a variety of medical conditions without surgery. For patients, interventional radiology treatments can provide safer alternative to surgery with less pain and a shorter recovery time.
